Why Saddle-Stitch Booklets Need Page Counts in Multiples of 4

Where does the "multiple of 4" rule actually come from?

Take a single sheet of paper and fold it once, down the middle. You now have 4 printable surfaces: the front outside, the back outside, and two inside faces. That's true regardless of paper size — letter, A4, tabloid, whatever your printer takes. One fold, four pages, no exceptions.

A saddle-stitch booklet nests several of these folded sheets inside one another before stapling through the common spine. Since each sheet you add contributes exactly 4 pages, the running total after any number of sheets is always a multiple of 4: 4 pages from one sheet, 8 from two, 12 from three, 16 from four, and so on.

Is it always exactly 4, or do commercial presses use bigger jumps?

For a desktop printer or an office copier, you're always thinking in units of 4, because you're feeding individual letter- or A4-size sheets one at a time. A commercial press works differently: it prints on a much larger press sheet that gets folded multiple times and then trimmed, producing 8, 16, or even 32 pages from a single pass through the press.

Even so, the underlying math doesn't change. An 8-page press signature is really two folds of the same sheet, and it still needs to combine with other signatures in multiples that add up to a number divisible by 4 — because saddle stitching still nests folded units inside one another regardless of how large the original press sheet was. If your print shop asks for a page count "in multiples of 8" instead of 4, that's simply because their press produces 8-page signatures as its base unit; the count you send them still has to be divisible by 4 at minimum, and matching their preferred multiple avoids an extra, thinner signature that complicates the imposition.

For short runs printed on a desktop or office machine, none of this changes the guidance: think in units of 4, and let the page-count rounder below handle the arithmetic.

What happens if I design a 13-page booklet?

Thirteen pages don't divide evenly into folded sheets. If you tried to impose it anyway, the last sheet would only have content for one of its four page positions, leaving three surfaces with nothing assigned — the layout math simply breaks. Imposition software (or a person doing manual layout) has to pick a target: round 13 up to 16 and pad with 3 blank pages.

Rounding down isn't usually an option, since that means deleting real content rather than adding filler, and doing that on a deadline is a worse problem than a few blank sheets. So the standard move is always to round up to the next multiple of 4 and decide where the added blanks go.

Where should blank pages go so they're least noticeable?

The end of the book and the inside back cover are the two best spots. Readers expect a booklet to wind down near the back, so one or two unprinted pages right before or as the inside back cover read as intentional white space rather than a mistake. Placing blanks in the middle of the sequence is the option to avoid — it interrupts the flow of spreads and is much more likely to look like an error to the reader.

If you have exactly one blank to place, put it on the inside back cover, directly before the outside back cover. If you have two or three, spread them across the last two or three page positions rather than stacking every blank as fully white pages back to back; alternating a blank with a light design element keeps the ending from feeling abrupt.

Designer tricks for using the extra pages instead of hiding them

Blank pages don't have to be wasted space. A notes page ("Use this page for your own sketches") works well for zines and workbooks. A full-bleed photo or illustration on the second-to-last page gives lookbooks and event programs a strong closing visual instead of dead space. A colophon — printer credits, paper stock, edition number — is a classic zine-making move that fills a blank page with content readers of that format actually expect to see.

For church bulletins and event programs, the inside back cover is often used for a sponsor thank-you list, a map, or contact information, which is both useful to the reader and a natural place for content that doesn't fit the main flow. Treat the forced blank pages as a design opportunity rather than a compromise, and the multiple-of-4 rule stops feeling like a constraint.

Does the multiple-of-4 rule apply to the cover too?

It applies to the whole finished booklet, including covers, if the cover is self-cover (printed on the same stock as the interior and part of the same folded sheets). If you use a separate, heavier cover stock wrapped around the interior signature, the interior pages still need to be a multiple of 4, and the cover itself is simply one folded sheet.

What if I only need to add 1 or 2 pages, not a full 4?

You still round up to the next multiple of 4 and add that many blank pages. There's no way to add a partial sheet in saddle stitching, since every sheet contributes 4 pages as a fixed unit, so a booklet at 14 pages still needs 2 blanks to reach 16, not 1.

Can I remove a page instead of adding blanks?

Yes, if you're close to the next-lower multiple of 4. Cutting one page from a 15-page draft gets you to 14 — still not a multiple of 4 in that example — but trimming to 12 pages instead of padding to 16 is often the better editorial call if the content allows it.

Does saddle stitch work for exactly 4 pages?
