How can I check for creep before a full print run?

Print a plain dummy: output the exact page count on the exact stock you plan to use, fold it into a signature the same way it will be bound, and trim the open edge just as the finisher would. Measure the width of the innermost spread against the outermost spread with a ruler. If the difference is small relative to your margins — typically under 2mm for booklets up to about 48 pages on standard text stock — you likely don't need to shingle by hand.
