Saddle Stitch Imposition: From PDF to Folded, Stapled Booklet

What does "saddle stitch" actually mean?

Why can't I just print the PDF pages in order?

If you print a linear PDF as-is and staple the pages together at the edge, you get a report, not a booklet. Saddle stitching requires folded sheets, and a folded sheet puts two non-adjacent pages side by side. Page 1 of a 12-page booklet shares a sheet with page 12, not page 2.

Imposition software works out that pairing for every sheet in the signature and lays the pages out so the outside of the sheet holds the front cover and back cover, the next sheet in holds pages 2 and 11, and so on, working inward toward the center spread. This is often called "printer's pairs" or "reader's spreads to printer's spreads" conversion.

For a 12-page booklet the sheet order is: sheet 1 outside carries pages 12 and 1, sheet 1 inside carries pages 2 and 11; sheet 2 outside carries pages 10 and 3, sheet 2 inside carries pages 4 and 9; sheet 3 (the center) carries pages 8, 5 on one side and 6, 7 on the other. Get any pairing wrong and the booklet reads out of sequence the moment it's folded.

How does duplex printing fit into imposition?

Each sheet in the table above has two sides: front and back. When you print duplex (double-sided), the printer driver flips the sheet along one edge, so the imposed layout has to account for which way that flip happens — long-edge or short-edge — or the back side prints upside down relative to the front.

Most home and office printers default to long-edge duplex, which matches standard booklet imposition. If your back pages come out upside down, check the duplex setting first before assuming the imposition is wrong; it's the single most common finishing mistake with saddle-stitch jobs.

Commercial print shops often prefer a single large "flat" sheet printed on both sides and then cut and folded by machine, rather than relying on a home printer's duplex unit. If you're sending files to a shop, ask whether they want your PDF already imposed or whether their imposition software (an RIP or prepress tool) expects pages in reading order and will impose it on their end.

Steps to impose a saddle-stitch booklet in the browser tool

What should I double-check before sending a job to print?

Three checks catch most saddle-stitch mistakes before they cost you paper. First, confirm the page count is divisible by 4 — a stray odd page forces the imposition tool to pad automatically, sometimes in a spot you didn't intend. Second, check bleed and margins: content near the spine can get lost in the fold if your inside margin is too tight, so keep live text at least 0.375″ (about 9.5mm) from the spine. Third, print one physical proof and fold it by hand before running the full quantity, since a screen preview can't show you how thick paper behaves once it's nested and stapled.

Above that range, some shops split the job into two or more signatures, each saddle-stitched separately and then either glued along a shared edge (a hybrid binding sometimes called "notch binding") or simply not combined at all.

Does saddle stitch imposition change my page content?

No. Imposition only changes page order and position on the sheet. Your original page content, fonts, and images are unchanged; the tool rearranges which page sits next to which on each printed sheet.

What's the difference between saddle stitch and perfect binding imposition?

Saddle stitch nests folded sheets inside one another and staples through the fold, so imposition uses a single, continuous signature. Perfect binding groups pages into separate flat signatures that are glued at a square spine, so the imposition math and page groupings differ.

Can I impose a PDF that isn't a multiple of 4 pages?
